Actual WBBM-TV on screen ID shorty after the move from channel 4 to channel 2 in 1953

CHICAGO TELEVISION GALLERIES

CBS Television in Chicago made itself available through the facilities of Paramount's WBKB-Channel 4 beginning in 1949.  However, it did not air all of the networks' offerings.  What did not run on WBKB aired on WGN-TV channel 9, which also cleared much of the DuMont Television Network's schedule.  In 1953 following the merger of United Paramount Theaters and The American Broadcasting Company, WBKB-Channel 4 was sold to CBS and assumed the calls WBBM-TV.  In compliance with the FCC's efforts to straighten out the VHF assignment mess, CBS moves it to channel 2 two months later.

Station WNBQ channel 5 began a regular broadcast schedule in January of 1949.  Taking its cue from the other NBC "o&o"s, using NB_ to identify their stations, it almost began life as WNBY but changed to WNBQ as so not be confused with The Moody Bible Institute's WMBI-FM.  When Jerry Rose was preparing to launch WCFC it was still called WCFL-TV as shown in the photo on the right.

BEER AND CARS WERE POPULAR  SPONSORS OF EARLY CHICAGO TELEVISION.   WNBQ WAS ALREADY CLAIMING #1 STATUS ON SUNDAYS IN OCTOBER OF 1949,  LESS THAN A YEAR AFTER IT FIRST SIGNED ON!
